Petunia flower

Petunia Flower

The petunia flower belongs to that most useful class of garden flower, the bedding plant.  These are plants which give a long flowering season throughout the summer but need to be either lifted during the winter or sown from seed each year.  Petunias are half hardy annuals.  That is, they cannot withstand frost and they need to be replanted every year.  Most suburban gardeners do not raise the flowers themselves, but buy their  petunia flowers from a garden centre in a box in which they have been raised under heat in a nursery.

Petunia Flower

The petunia flower has become a very popular garden flower since it is free from the disease rust, which attacks antirrhinums or snapdragons.  The petunia is an excellent substitue for snapdragons in a sunny border.  It is always best bought from a garden centre, because it needs more heat to start than a cold frame can provide and if it is started in a normal greenhouse, it flowers too late to give a good show in the summer.  Only large commercial nurseries have the facilities for raising the plants early enough for a good show of petunia flowers throughout the summer.

Before putting the plants in, prepare the ground well by digging in plenty of leaf mould, bonemeal and compost.  Petunias need more feeding than snapdragons.  This extra feeding is one of the reasons that Victorian gardens had such a magnificent disply of bright flowers throughout the summer.  They took far more care to sweep and and stack their leaves so that they would rot down into a fine, friable mould.

If, therefore, you want a really fine display of scarlet salvia, lobelia, marigold, geranium, dahlia and petunia flowers, you should consider making your own leafmould.  Construct a simple square frame, with 4 posts put into the corners and chicken or rabbit metting nailed round the outside.  Make the frame at least one square metre, a little more if you have room. If possible, construct it in a cool, damp, shady area.  Sweep up your fallen leaves - offer to sweep up all your neighbours' leaves too.  You could even ask your local park for a few sackfuls in the autumn!  Empty the leaves into the frame, the wetter the better.  If they are dry, wet them thoroughly with a hose pipe.  Leave them for a year to rot down.

You can even make mould on a small scale by putting the leaves in a large polythene bag, making sure they are wet.  Leave the bag in a dark shed throughout the winter and you will have a small quantity of leaf mould in the spring.

Digging large quantities of mould into the flower bed will ensure that you have a brilliant display of petunia flowers throughout the summer.
